The kiddie marketers at Alloy’s Channel One News are doing their best to get young people to sign up for Napster the music download company. When Napster started years ago it was free and that of course incurred the wrath of the music industry.
Napster now charges for downloading digital music.
Channel One News is using their official website to get teens and preteens to sign up for a subscription to their service. This is wrong. Napster’s own terms and conditions say that one cannot sign up for their service if they are under the age of eighteen. If a student is between 13 and 18 then they can sign up for the service if their parents check a box on Napster’s website – like that will guarantee adult supervision. The point is Napster is not a product to be advertising on a children’s website.
Napster also says that no one under the age of 13 can sign up for their service even if the box is checked. Yet Channel One is splashing the Napster ad all over their website. Channel One’s main audience consists of middle school students. These ads are truly age-inappropriate for many of the visitors to Channelone.com.
Channel One News signed up this advertiser even though they know Napster’s service is difficult to understand, especially for Channel One’s age group.
