November 8, 2010 – A captive audience of teens and preteens have to watch this relatively obscure band plug Channel One’s advertising feature called Hear It Now.
Channel One News routinely advertises new musical acts during the “news” part of the show. This is clearly advertising, but it is in addition to the 2 minutes of formal ads on the daily show. Channel One News is limited to 2 minutes by its contract with schools.
Any band appearing on Channel One News has to be considered a struggling act. We the Kings formed in 2003 has yet to hit the big time as of December 2010 and therefore they are still seen and heard on the very “uncool” Channel One News program.
Note to We the Kings’ manager (if they have one): high school students in schools with Channel One News tend to consider the program a “middle school” TV show. Any music act on Channel One News risks being ridiculed by older students. Younger middle school students forced to watch Channel One are often the biggest fans of Channel One.
