Another movie ad wastes school time.

October 25, 2012

October 24, 2012 – Channel One News sells the introduction to their classroom TV show to 20th Century Fox movie studio to promote their new movie Chasing Mavericks. This is in violation of their contract with schools. This movie plug is IN ADDITION to the maximum 2 minutes of advertising allowed on each show. Channel One News gets away with this “bonus” advertising by simply calling the actor’s introduction “non-commercial.” Channel One also violates their school contracts because their own news standards forbids any guest host from plugging any CD, movie, or TV show. Chasing Mavericks will be in theaters on October 26, 2012. Movie studios love advertising on Channel One News because they can more effectively time their advertising to the captive audience of schoolchildren.

Two days before its release, Channel One News opens their classroom TV show with a plug for this 20th Century Fox movie.

Compelling students to watch movie ads? Believe it or not, in 2012, that still makes sense to a dwindling number of school administrators in many low-achieving secondary schools.
