From Jim Metrock:
Ms. CJ Kettler is now a Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Senior Vice President. Sweet. That didn’t take long.
It is obvious that Houghton Mifflin is excited about having Ms. Kettler on board. According to the Boston Business Journal, Ms. Kettler will surprisingly report directly to HMH’s CEO Linda Zecher. That has to miff some veteran Houghton Mifflin executives. After all, if Ms. Kettler had distinguished herself as a results-oriented leader for Channel One, ZelnickMedia would still be owning the company. Anyway, reporting directly to the CEO is a sign that Houghton Mifflin values Ms. Kettler very much.
In addition Ms. Kettler will apparently continue to call herself CEO and Chairman of Channel One according to her Linkedin page. A “Chairman” for such a small subsidiary as Channel One is a bit strange.
While Ms. Kettler takes on another title, it’s Ms. Zecher who is takes on the ultimate responsibility for transforming Channel One into a money-making contributor to HMH’s bottom line. That will be difficult if Houghton Mifflin continues to support Channel One’s advertiser-supported business model.
Also Ms. Zecher has a challenge ahead to make sure the acquistion of the highly controversial Channel One does not demoralize other Houghton Mifflin Harcourt employees.
