Dr. Witt: UA “will not be changing its policy”

free iron bowl tickets witt’s reply

From Jim Metrock:

In the past month I have tried twice to obtain a brief meeting with Dr. Robert Witt, the president of the University of Alabama.

I knew he was probably going to continue with the status quo, but I really thought he would meet with me.  I thought there was little downside for him to listen to another side of an important issue.  These free tickets are controversial.  Alabama newspapers have written about this annual giveaway.  Alabama citizens have voiced their outrage over these tickets on al.com and other websites.  Here I was an Alabama citizen asking for a few moments to talk to him and instead he sent me this letter.

I was going to show him the list of public officials who – well before our real campaign begins – have already agreed to refuse the offer of free tickets to the Auburn/Alabama football game.  I thought he might be impressed with that list.  Dr. Witt will see a much longer list in October.  I am timing this campaign to peak right before the November elections – not right before the Iron Bowl. What public official, even if they are not running for office, will tell the public they want these free Iron Bowl tickets, and the free parking instead of allowing these tickets to go to children charities?

We will all hear from Dr. Robert Witt on this subject again.  He might not be so indifferent to the mood of Alabama citizens when the leaves start falling.
