High school schedule to change
Excelsior Springs board OKs late start

By PATRICE R. HOLDERBACH The Kansas City Star

Alyssa Jewell and her fellow classmates at Excelsior Springs High School
have the option of sleeping in a tad later once a week next year.

That’s because teachers will collaborate from 7:05 a.m. to 7:50
a.m. Wednesdays, pushing back classes to 8 a.m. — a half-hour
later than every other weekday. Though the bus schedule will remain
the same throughout the week, students can opt not to arrive until
7:55 a.m. Wednesdays.

To make up that time, though, classes will begin five minutes earlier
on each of the other days than they did last year, with the tardy
bell ringing those days at 7:30 a.m.

The elimination of Channel One — educational programming targeting
high-school students — also will lend more time to classes, said
Principal Alan Bunch.

Jewell, who will be a sophomore this fall, said she had not heard of
the changes. But Bunch said students had been notified of the changes
last spring.

The schedule adjustment is just one of a number of changes outlined
in the revised student handbook, which the school board approved
recently.
