Channel One has been running, on average, one junk food commercial a day for the last five years. That is one of the findings in a study Obligation, Inc. has just completed. 100 Channel One shows were reviewed from the 1997-98 school year to 2001-02.
No shows from this school year were included. A separate study of this school year is planned for March 2003.
Obligation’s Jim Metrock said, “Channel One has played a big role in making young people more overweight. This company is irresponsible in its promotion of candy bars, soft drinks and other junk food. Any school that shows Channel One is undermining the health of its students.”
Obligation considered these Channel One-advertised products to be junk food: Snickers, Pringles, M&Ms, Twix Candy Bars, Skittles candy, Juicy Fruit gum, Mountain Dew, Hostess Cupcakes, Hostess Twinkies, Mug Root Beer, Bubble Yum gum, Cinnaburst, Winterfresh gum, Pepsi, and Crunch chocolate bars.
