From Jim Metrock: Strauss Zelnick loves to sell violence. The video game Grand Theft Auto has been very good to Mr. Zelnick. His company ZelnickMedia owns the company that makes GTA and Red Ded Redemption depicted in the poster behind Mr. Zelnick.
Mr. Zelnick is also the man calling the shots, so to speak, at Channel One News. You see he also owns this controversial youth marketing company.
He recently was quoted praising CJ Kettler Channel One’s latest CEO:
“By investing in curriculum resources that help teachers tie the daily broadcast to state curriculum standards, Channel One is creating a searchable, on-demand and easily accessible database of non-fiction educational material. With CJ at the helm, Channel One News is poised to make a real impact on the EdTech industry and we’re thrilled to have her on board.”
Mr. Zelnick said all the right buzz words, but he knows how tough it will be for the new CEO to transform the pariah of American education into a shiny, high-tech, EdTech content provider. Channel One has been a major embarrassment for ZelnickMedia since Channel One was acquired in 2010.
How long will he give Ms. Kettler to pull Channel One out of its decade long nose dive into irrelevance? I believe the honeymoon will last months, not years.
