Snowboarder Dominates C1 Today

January 25, 2002

“WATCH KELLY CLARK CARVE THROUGH THE DEEP POWDER…” Good Grief! Channel One.

Channel One doesn’t do hard news well, but they do “filler material” extremely well. Watch today’s show (video at channelone.com) and see the long report on a young lady who will be snowboarding in the Olympics.

Channel One’s staff thought this was a fun thing for kids to watch. It is understandable why some students, especially middle school students, love this show.

IF YOU WATCH THE WINTER OLYMPICS IN SALT LAKE CITY NEXT MONTH, PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE SNOWBOARDING. IF YOU DO, YOU’LL GET TO SEE KELLY CLARK RIDE THE PIPE. SHE’S A TEENAGE PHENOM FROM MOUNT SNOW, VERMONT. AND LESS THAN A YEAR AFTER GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL, SHE’S ONE OF THE BEST IN THE WORLD. I MET UP WITH KELLY ON THE SLOPES OF MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN IN MAMMOTH LAKES, CALIFORNIA.

OR WATCH HER GO BIG ON THE PIPE AND YOU’LL SWEAR SHE WAS BORN TO SNOWBOARD…
[MUSIC]
NOT TRUE, SHE CLAIMS. KELLY FIRST HIT THE SLOPES AS A SKIER, BUT BY THE TIME SHE WAS SEVEN, SHE’D BEGUN BOARDING…
[SOT DERRICK AND KELLY]
[RUNS=:22]
((02:02:58 D: So, do you remember the first time you went snowboarding?
KC: Actually, it didn’t really count cuz it was like a plastic snowboard and I got it at like Kmart and I was totally psyched and it was called the Mogul Monster and it was just off a snow bank. But I do remember at the time I really did go to a ski hill, and I was so small.. D: did you do well? KC: No, I was terrible D: really? Just like everyone else that starts snowboarding. its just so hard at first.))

HARD AT FIRST MAYBE. BUT HERE’S A FACT: KELLY GOT GOOD. REALLY GOOD.
[MUSIC]
[RUNS=:10]
AT JUST EIGHTEEN, SHE’S CONSIDERED ONE OF THE BEST FEMALE BOARDERS IN THE WORLD… SHE WAS THE JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPION IN 2000, WON THE 2001 VAN’S TRIPLE CROWN, AND FINISHED FIRST IN THIS YEAR’S GRAND PRIX. AND, SHE’LL GET TO PROVE HERSELF AGAIN NEXT MONTH IN SALT LAKE CITY. THAT’S BECAUSE WITH THIS RUN, KELLY CLINCHED HER SPOT ON THE OLYMPIC TEAM. IT’S AN HONOR THAT SHE’S TRYING TO TAKE IN STRIDE.

((DS: Are you making any special preparations?
KC: Same old, same old. I mean, I’m trying to learn new tricks but I’d be trying to learn new tricks anyways. I just train the same, and if I can ride well, hopefully it will work out.))

IT’S WITH THAT EASY-GOING STYLE THAT KELLY LIVES HER LIFE… SOMETHING I APPRECIATED AS I TRIED TO KEEP UP WITH HER.
[DERRICK CRASHES INTO KELLY OUT OF BREATH.]
[SOT]
DS: Sorry about that.
KC: Oh, I don’t care.
DS: Kelly’s like all refreshed, and relaxed, and I’m a little cold.

BUT WHEN SHE’S IN THE PIPE, SHE’S ALL BUSINESS… ALWAYS PUSHING THE LIMITS…
[SOT KELLY]
(—SOT KELLY—)
I’ve let go of every fear boundary that there is, you know you can’t hold back you have to go for it. If you’re gonna do it, you go all the way you know//you can’t do it half-hearted//and that’s, probably one of my better qualities even if I do -have been known to take quite a few falls and leave blood in the pipe and whatever else they say about me.

ONE FALL, LAST APRIL, ALMOST ENDED HER BOARDING CAREER…

((I don’t remember it I got knocked out and I didn’t know people jumped in and tried to get me out, but I didn’t know who they were even though they were like some of my good friends and they were like, “Where are you?” and I’m like , “OH, it looks really familiar but I have no idea where.”//and I couldn’t feel my hands or my arms and they all went numb and I kind of freaked out I’m like, “Something’s wrong. I can’t feel my arms.” And I was just a mess and dazed…))

THE WIPE-OUT SIDELINED KELLY FOR A WHILE… THE DOCTORS TOLD HER NO RIDING FOR TWO MONTHS…
[SOT]
(—SOT—)
[RUNS=:19]
((KC: They said that if I hit my head again in that next two months that my chance of death would increase by 70 percent.
DS: Did that scare you?
KC: Yeah, it’s pretty scary it’s like a rude awakening. You didn’t realize it until it happens, you know but it happens all the time and it’s just part of the game you gotta take some hard falls to do well.))
[MUSIC]
[RUNS=:04]

KELLY TOLD ME THAT SHE’S SUCCESSFUL MOSTLY BECAUSE SHE LOVES WHAT SHE DOES… AND IT’S THAT PASSION SHE HOPES MIGHT RUB OFF ON HER FANS…

(( I liked snowboarding when I was younger cuz it kept me out of trouble on the weekends I wouldn’t get into trouble I wouldn’t go to parties cuz I’d be like “no, way I’m going snowboarding in the morning it’s gonna be sweeeet!” And, I thought it did a lot of good for me as far as those terms go, so I hope that I can kind of work the same for someone.))

KELLY TOLD ME THAT TO BECOME AN OLYMPIC ATHLETE HAS TAKEN YEARS OF DEDICATION, AND SHE’S HAD TO SACRIFICE SOME OF THE THINGS IN A NORMAL TEENAGERS LIFE — NO PROM FOR INSTANCE. BUT, SHE SAYS, IT’S A TRADE-OFF SHE’D MAKE ANYTIME. WE WISH KELLY THE BEST OF LUCK AT THE OLYMPICS NEXT MONTH. AND IF YOU WANT TO TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE ON THE OLYMPIC GAMES, GO TO CHANNELONE.COM AND CLICK ON SPORTS.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND GUYS -WE’LL SEE YOU ON MONDAY.

Well over half of today’s Channel One News had nothing to do with hard
news. Obligation estimates that less than 25% of C1N deals with real news
of national or international importance. In 1997, Professor Bill Hoynes
of Vassar College released a study showing there was very little hard news
on Channel One News (about 20%).

Jim Metrock said, “Today’s show would be laughable if it wasn’t for
the massive loss of time it represents. Taxpayers across the country are
waking up to this abuse. Today’s show is typical. Feature stories on snowboarders,
NBA basketball stars, and commercials for sleazy movies and candy bars
will not prepare one student for graduation. You don’t have to look further
for reasons why schools are not signing up for the most controversial show
on TV.”
