A look back to 2023: Another bad idea in education goes away. Edmodo closes up.

December 5, 2025

From Jim Metrock: About six years ago, I met several Edmodo employees at an ISTE trade show in Philadelphia. They had a booth in the exhibit hall. They were trying their best to sell their company to teachers and school administrators.

One would think it was easy to “sell” their company to schools because their product was free. No, make that “free.” As we know with the long-dead Channel One News, ‘free” means exorbitantly expensive. Edmodo was free to teachers because they made the students paid.

Edmodo wanted information on students so they could sell that information to others who desperately desired kiddie data. I remember telling one Edmodo employee, “Why don’t you make a truly great product that schools would pay for. Then students would not have their personal data exposed.” The Edmodo employee had nothing to say.
