Top Story: Super Bowl

February 6, 2006

This is from Channel One’s
February 6 transcript. The Super Bowl is the top story. Notice how
Channel One tries to get some positive message from some of the football
players. C1N believes that any feature story can be filler if it
contains a "You can do it, kids" moment . The C1N reporter
didn’t quite get what she wanted from the Seahawks quarterback.

SUPER BOWL OPEN
MELISSA: THE TIME FOR TALK IS OVER, AND THE
TWO TEAMS LEFT STANDING DO BATTLE IN MO-TOWN TO SEE WHO WILL
BE SUPER BOWL CHAMPION. COMING UP ON CHANNEL ONE NEWS — WE’RE
IN DETROIT FOR THE GAME FOOTBALL FANS HAVE WAITED FOR ALL YEAR
LONG.

HELLOS
ERROL: WHAT’S GOING ON, EVERYONE? HOPE YOU ALL ENJOYED
YOUR SUPER BOWL WEEKEND.
INTRO SUPER BOWL

ERROL: WE HAVE A JAM-PACKED SHOW FOR YOU…
LOTS OF NEWS AHEAD. SO FIRST, LET’S HEAD TO DETROIT WHERE THE
PITTSBURGH STEELERS AND THE SEATTLE SEAHAWKS MET FOR THE 40TH
EDITION OF THE BIG GAME. MELISSA WAS THERE FOR ALL THE ACTION
AND SHE JOINS US RIGHT NOW WITH MORE FROM FORD FIELD. HEY,
MELISSA.

MELISSA INTRO
MELISSA: HEY, ERROL. THE SUPER BOWL IS SUPPOSED TO BE
PLAYED ON A NEUTRAL SITE, BUT IT SURE LOOKED LIKE MOST OF THE FANS WERE
WAVING THE TERRIBLE TOWELS OF THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS. AND AS IT TURNED
OUT, THEY SURE HAD A LOT TO WAVE ABOUT.
SUPER BOWL

MELISSA: BEFORE THE GAME, I RAN INTO A COUPLE
OF LUCKY TEENAGERS WHO HAD SCORED TICKETS.

CHAD HUDEPOHL, 18: IT FEELS
GREAT, IT’S A GREAT EXPERIENCE, A ONCE IN A LIFETIME THING. MELISSA:
WHO’S GONNA WIN AND WHAT’S THE FINAL SCORE?

JORDAN HARBISON: 15: STEELERS
35-14.

MELISSA: YOU HEARD IT HERE
FIRST. THANK YOU SO MUCH, JORDAN.
AS IT TURNED OUT, SEATTLE WENT ON TOP 3-0 WITH THIS 47-YARDER BY JOSH
BROWN.
MEANWHILE, THE STEELERS’ BEN ROETHLISBERGER WAS HAVING PROBLEMS… THIS
PASS WAS INTERCEPTED BY MICHAEL BOULWARE.
BUT BIG BEN DID GET PITTSBURGH ON THE SCOREBOARD, BARELY, WITH THIS RUN.
AND THE STEELERS LED 7-3 AT THE HALF.
THIRD QUARTER… WILLIE PARKER RACES INTO THE HISTORY BOOKS, GOING A
RECORD 75 YARDS FOR THE T-D. THE SEAHAWKS CAME BACK… HASSELBECK HITTING
JARRAMY STEVENS FOR THE SCORE, AND IT WAS 14-10. AND SEATTLE WAS THREATENING
TO TAKE THE LEAD WHEN HASSELBECK WAS PICKED OFF INSIDE THE TEN BY IKE
TAYLOR.
THAT SET UP THIS SPECTACULAR PLAY… ANTWAN RANDLE EL TAKES THE HAND-OFF
ON A REVERSE FROM PARKER AND HITS HINES WARD DOWNFIELD… 43 YARDS FOR
THE SCORE.
21-10… THAT’S ALL THE STEELERS NEEDED TO WIN THEIR FIFTH SUPER BOWL
TITLE.
AFTERWARDS, I TALKED TO SOME OF THE PLAYERS.WHAT DO YOU SAY TO YOUNG
PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BE IN YOUR SPOT ONE DAY AND BE WEARING THAT CHAMPIONSHIP
HAT?

WILLIE PARKER — PITTSBURGH RUNNING
BACK
: NEVER GIVE UP. I WOULDN’T HAVE THOUGHT IN A
MILLION YEARS I’D BE RIGHT HERE WHERE I’M AT TODAY. DON’T GIVE
UP. MELISSA: BEN, YOU’RE 23, WHAT’S NEXT AND WHAT DO YOU TELL
YOUNG PEOPLE ABOUT ACHIEVING GOALS LIKE THIS?

BEN ROETHLISBERGER: WELL,
HOPEFULLY WE CAN COME BACK AND HAVE A GOOD SEASON NEXT YEAR,
BUT YOU KNOW, I’M GONNA TAKE SOME TIME OFF RIGHT NOW AND REST
AND RELAX. AND TO TELL YOUNG KIDS… YOU KNOW, A LOT OF PEOPLE
SAY YOU CAN’T DO IT AND DOUBT YOU AND DISBELIEVE, BUT YOU GOTTA
PROVE THEM WRONG AND SHOW THAT ANYTHING CAN BE DONE. MELISSA:
MATT, WHAT DO YOU TELL YOUNG PEOPLE ABOUT COMING BACK FROM A
LOSS LIKE THIS AND MAKING BIG PLAYS NEXT YEAR?

MATT HASSELBECK — SEATTLE QUARTERBACK:
I DON’T KNOW, WE TRIED OUR HARDEST. OUR BEST WASN’T GOOD ENOUGH
TODAY… I’M KIND OF AT A LOSS FOR WORDS THAT WAY.
TAG AND THROW
MELISSA: OF COURSE, THAT MADE IT A FAIRY TALE ENDING
FOR THE STEELERS’ JEROME BETTIS. HE CAME BACK THIS YEAR FOR A CHANCE
TO PLAY THE SUPER BOWL IN HIS HOMETOWN OF DETROIT. AND MOMENTS AFTER
THE GAME, HE ANNOUNCED THAT HE’S HANGING UP HIS CLEATS. ERROL?

ERROL: ALRIGHT, MELISSA
KNOWLES IN DETROIT. THANKS, MELISSA.
