COLD OPEN – CALI IN TORINO
CALI: HEY, GUYS, HOW’S IT GOING? I’M CALI CARLIN HERE IN TORINO,
ITALY WHERE OPENING CEREMONIES FOR THE WINTER GAMES ARE JUST HOURS
AWAY. I HAVE THAT STORY AND MORE — CHANNEL ONE NEWS STARTS RIGHT
NOW.
HELLOS
ERROL: WHAT’S GOING ON, EVERYONE? THE WEEKEND IS JUST ABOUT HERE,
SO LET’S NOT WASTE ANY TIME AND GET RIGHT TO WHAT’S HAPPENING.
INTRO CALI
ERROL: MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ACROSS THE GLOBE ARE FOCUSED ON AN ITALIAN
CITY IN THE SHADOWS OF THE ALPS. THAT’S BECAUSE TODAY MARKS THE
OPENING CEREMONIES FOR THE 2006 WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES.
CALI IS IN TORINO AND JOINS US NOW WITH MORE ON THE FESTIVITIES.
CALI INTRO
CALI: OK, SO HERE ARE THE NUMBERS… ABOUT 80 COUNTRIES, 26-HUNDRED
ATHLETES WILL PARTICIPATE IN 84 COMPETITIONS SPANNING 15 DIFFERENT
SPORTS. AND IT ALL KICKS OFF WITH OPENING CEREMONIES. SO THE RUSH
TO GET THE GAMES GOING IS ON.
GAMES OPEN
CALI: FANS CHEERED AS THE TORCH ARRIVED. AND WHILE THE OLYMPIC
GAMES ARE ALL ABOUT THE ATHLETES, THE HOST CITY TAKES CENTER STAGE
AS WELL. THIS YEAR THAT CITY IS TORINO, A UNIQUE MIX OF THE OLD
AND NEW.
THE CITY WAS ONCE THE CAPITAL OF ITALY, AND IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE
BIRTHPLACE OF THE ITALIAN AUTO INDUSTRY.
BUT THE BIG QUESTION NOW… IS THE CITY READY FOR THE GAMES?
WE’RE HERE AT PIAZZA CASTELLO, AND THIS VENUE KIND OF HAS THE FLAVOR
OF A ROCK CONCERT, WHICH IT BASICALLY IS, BECAUSE IN JUST OVER
A DAY, ATHLETES WILL BEGIN TO RECEIVE THAT GOLD, SILVER AND BRONZE
HERE AT THE MEDALS CEREMONY PLAZA. BUT FOR NOW, WORKERS ARE RACING
TO PUT THOSE FINAL TOUCHES SO THAT THIS SHOW CAN BE UP AND RUNNING.
ALL OVER THE CITY, WORKERS ARE FINISHING UP FINAL CONSTRUCTION.
BUT ONE EVENT ORGANIZER ASSURED ME TORINO IS READY. WILL ALL THE
VENUES BE UP AND RUNNING?
GIUSEPPE GATTINO — TORINO ORGANIZING
CMTE: YEAH, DEFINITELY, NO PROBLEM WITH THAT. CALI: NOT
ONLY WILL THEY BE READY, THEY’LL BE SECURE.
GIUSEPPE GATTINO: WE ALREADY HAD
SIX-THOUSAND POLICEMAN AND MILITARY PEOPLE BASED IN TORINO.
THE GOVERNMENT, THE MINISTRY OF DOMESTIC AFFAIRS, THEY
DECIDED TO SEND HERE NINE-THOUSAND PEOPLE MORE. CALI:
ATHLETES WILL COMPETE IN NINE OUTDOOR FACILITIES SCATTERED
AROUND THE ITALIAN ALPS AND FIVE INDOOR FACILITIES. THE
THEME OF THE GAMES IS "PASSION LIVES HERE." AND
THERE’S NO DOUBT THAT LOCAL TEENS ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT
THEIR CITY. BOY: I THINK IT’S VERY FANTASTIC.
BOY: IT’S VERY INTERESTING.
BOY: IT’S A BEAUTIFUL CITY.
CALI: AT ONE PIAZZA DOWNTOWN, I
TALKED WITH STUDENTS WHO, BY TONIGHT, WILL BE WAY MORE
THAN JUST FANS.
IRENA SCIARELLO — STUDENT: WE
ARE PERFORMERS OF THE OPENING CEREMONY. SHE IS A CLASSICAL
DANCER.
CALI: AND THEY ALL AGREED THAT THE
GAMES ARE A CHANCE FOR THEIR CITY TO SHINE.
IRENA SCIARELLO: IN ITALY, PEOPLE
KNOW ROME OR MILANO, BUT NOBODY KNOW TORINO.
CALI: THEY WILL NOW. AS THE OLYMPIC
FLAME TAKES THE FINAL LEG OF ITS JOURNEY, TWO BILLION
PEOPLE ARE EXPECTED TO FOCUS ON TORINO, THE OPENING CEREMONIES
AND THE ATHLETES OF THE 20TH WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES.
TAG AND THROW
CALI: IN TYPICAL ITALIAN FASHION, THERE’S BEEN A LOT OF LAST MINUTE
TICKET SALES… ABOUT 100-THOUSAND IN THE LAST FEW WEEKS. ORGANIZERS
EXPECT A MILLION VISITORS TO THE CITY AND ARE HOPING TO HAVE THE
SEATS ABOUT 80 PERCENT FULL. WELL, I WILL HAVE MORE FROM TORINO
A LITTLE LATER, BUT FIRST WE’LL HEAD BACK TO THE STUDIO FOR MORE
CHANNEL ONE NEWS, SO STICK AROUND.
BE BACK
ERROL: ALRIGHT, WE’LL SEE YOU IN A BIT — THANKS, CALI. SWITCHING
GEARS NOW … WHEN IT COMES TO ILLEGAL DRUGS, WHO DO YOU THINK
USES MORE — GUYS OR GIRLS? YOU JUST MIGHT BE SURPRISED. DETAILS,
COMING UP.
DRUG STUDY
ERROL: WELCOME BACK. IN TODAY’S WORLD, GIRLS CAN PRETTY MUCH DO
ANYTHING BOYS CAN. UNFORTUNATELY, THAT ALSO INCLUDES DRUG USE.
A NEW STUDY BY THE NATIONAL SURVEY ON DRUG USE AND HEALTH FOUND
AN ALARMING TREND WHEN IT COMES TO GIRLS AND DRUGS.
IN 2004, MORE GIRLS STARTED USING ALCOHOL, CIGARETTES AND MARIJUANA
THAN BOYS. AND WHEN IT COMES TO PRESCRIPTION DRUGS, INCLUDING DIET
PILLS, GIRLS MISUSE THEM MORE THAN BOYS.
IT’S THE FIRST TIME THAT THE RATE OF USE BY GIRLS HAS EQUALED OR
EXCEEDED BOYS. SO WHY THE INCREASE?
JOHN WALTERS — ONDCP DIRECTOR: WHAT THE RESEARCH TELLS
US IS, ONE, THAT GIRLS FEEL THAT THE PRESSURE FROM PEERS
IS GREATER AND MORE OF A FACTOR IN THEIR USING DRUGS AND
ALCOHOL AND CIGARETTES.
ERROL: THE STUDY SAYS GIRLS REPORTED DEPRESSION MORE THAN
TWICE AS MUCH AS BOYS. THIS SUPPORTS FINDINGS THAT GIRLS
ALSO TEND TO USE DRUGS TO IMPROVE THEIR MOOD OR COPE WITH
PROBLEMS.
BUT NOT ALL THE NEWS OUT OF THE STUDY WAS BAD.
JOHN WALTERS: OVERALL, TEENS ARE DOING A GOOD JOB. LESS
OF THEM ARE USING DRUGS, BUT THE PROPORTIONS BETWEEN BOYS
ARE GIRLS ARE TROUBLING IN THIS REGARD, AND IT REQUIRES
US TO, IF WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE THE DECLINES, TO SPECIALLY
DEAL WITH THE CAUSES OF GIRLS USING AT A GREATER RATE.
ERROL: AND ONLINE YOU CAN GET THE FACTS ON DRUG ABUSE,
INCLUDING COMMON MYTHS AND A QUIZ THAT WILL HELP YOU SPOT
ABUSE IN OTHERS. JUST LOOK FOR ‘TEENS AND DRUGS’ ON THE
HOME PAGE AT CHANNELONE.COM.
BUSH L-A BUILDING
ERROL: MOVING NOW TO THE WAR ON TERROR — PRESIDENT BUSH HAS REVEALED
THE DETAILS OF A TERRORIST PLOT AIMED AT LOS ANGELES. IT WAS FOILED,
HE SAID, BY U-S COUNTER INTELLIGENCE FORCES.
THE PRESIDENT HAS SPOKEN OF THWARTED TERRORIST PLOTS BEFORE…
BUT NEVER IN SUCH DETAIL.
PRESIDENT BUSH: WE NOW KNOW THAT IN OCTOBER 2001, KHALID
SHEIK MOHAMMED, THE MASTERMIND OF THE SEPTEMBER 11TH ATTACKS,
HAD ALREADY SET IN MOTION A PLAN TO HAVE TERRORIST OPERATIVES
HIJACK AN AIRPLANE USING SHOE BOMBS TO BREACH THE COCKPIT
DOOR AND FLY THE PLANE INTO THE TALLEST BUILDING ON THE
WEST COAST.
ERROL: THIS WAS THE BUILDING… THE 73-STORY U-S BANK
TOWER IN DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES. SHEIKH MOHAMMED WAS LATER
CAPTURED BY U-S FORCES IN PAKISTAN. THE PRESIDENT DIDN’T
SAY WHETHER A CONTROVERSIAL WIRETAPPING PROGRAM WAS USED
TO FOIL THE PLOT. THIS WEEK, THE GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN BRIEFING
CONGRESS ABOUT THE PROGRAM.
UP NEXT
ERROL: ALL RIGHT, EVERYONE, IT’S ABOUT TIME
TO TALK SPORTS. WE’LL HEAD BACK TO ITALY, PLUS THE PLAY OF THE
WEEK FOLLOWS THE BREAK.
POTW
ERROL: NOW, IN BASKETBALL, THE LAST SECOND SHOT CAN SEPARATE THE
CHAMPS FROM, WELL, LET’S BE HONEST, THE CHUMPS. AND TODAY’S GATORADE
PLAY OF THE WEEK SHOWS A CHAMP DOING HER THING.
WE GO TO GEORGIA WHERE, WITH THE CLOCK WINDING DOWN TO THE HALF,
MACON SOUTHWEST’S MYESHIA SIMMS COLLECTS A PASS, DRIBBLES PAST
HALF COURT AND DIALS UP LONG DISTANCE FOR A 3-POINTER THAT KISSES
THE GLASS! NICE.
A GATORADE COOLER AND A CASE OF
POWDER MIX IS ON THE WAY.
AND DALE GONZALEZ, THANKS FOR SENDING IN THAT PLAY … YOU’LL BE
GETTING SOME STUFF FROM GATORADE AS WELL.
AND FOR THE REST OF YOU, SEND IN YOUR PLAYS TO: CHANNEL ONE SPORTS
— P-O BOX 74911 — LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — 90004.
INTRO CALI
ERROL: AND STICKING TO THE SPORTS THEME, IT’S TIME TO HEAD ON BACK
TO ITALY WHERE CALI IS COVERING THE OLYMPIC ACTION AND THE ATHLETES.
HEY, CALI.
INTRO CLINT
CALI: HEY, ERROL. BY 15, CLINT JONES HAD WON HIS FIRST U-S SKI
JUMPING TITLE. INTERNATIONALLY, THOUGH, HE HASN’T DONE NEARLY AS
WELL. BUT HERE IN TORINO, CLINT JONES IS LOOKING TO CHANGE ALL
THAT.
CLINT JONES
CALI: IMAGINE BEING SHOT OUT OF A CANNON OFF THE SIDE OF A MOUNTAIN
IN FREEZING COLD WEATHER.
WELCOME TO CLINT JONES’ WORLD.
YOU COULD SAY CLINT WAS BORN TO FLY… HE WASTED NO TIME GETTING
AIRBORNE, AND WAS ALWAYS A FIERCE COMPETITOR.
GROWING UP IN STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, THE HEART OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS,
IT’S NO SURPRISE THAT CLINT TOOK RIGHT TO THE SNOW.
CLINT JONES, 21 — U-S SKI JUMPER:
I WAS ALPINE SKIING FROM THE TIME I WAS, LIKE, TWO OR
THREE. I STARTED JUMPING WHEN I WAS FIVE. BY THE TIME
I WAS ABOUT EIGHT OR NINE, I GAVE UP WITH ALPINE SKIING
AND JUST DECIDED JUMPING WAS THE MOST FUN, COOL WAY TO
GO. CALI: IT’S BEEN ALL DOWNHILL SINCE.
CLINT BECAME THE YOUNGEST U-S SKI
JUMPING CHAMP IN U-S HISTORY. COMPETING IN TORINO WILL
MARK HIS SECOND OLYMPIC APPEARANCE. IN SALT LAKE, CLINT
WAS JUST 17 AND DIDN’T DO AS WELL AS HE HAD HOPED.
CLINT JONES: I WAS ONE OF THE YOUNGEST
COMPETITORS AT THE OLYMPICS THAT YEAR, SO IT’S KIND OF
HARD TO BE TOO HARD ON THE PERFORMANCE IN THAT SITUATION.
AND I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT OLYMPICS TO REALLY
GO AND COMPETE AND DO WELL.
CALI: THAT MEANS HARDCORE TRAINING.
NO SNOW? NO PROBLEM. THIS SUMMER, I CAUGHT UP WITH CLINT TRAINING
IN PARK CITY, UTAH, WHERE WITHOUT THE WHITE STUFF, THESE GUYS
HAD NO PROBLEM JUMPING.
CLINT JONES: WE ARE UP HERE JUMPING
THREE TO FOUR DAYS A WEEK YEAR-ROUND. THEY’VE GOT THESE
AWESOME PLASTIC FACILITIES HERE AND A COUPLE OTHER PLACES
IN THE U-S AND ALL OVER THE WORLD, SO WE’RE ALWAYS JUMPING
AND TRAVELING AROUND THE WORLD.
CALI: AND COMMITMENT IN SKI JUMPING
IS ABOUT MORE THAN JUST YEAR-ROUND TRAINING.
CLINT JONES: SKI JUMPING, LIKE,
YOU HAVE TWO TRACKS, AND AFTER YOU LET GO OF THE BAR,
THERE IS NO REAL TURNING BACK. CALI: ONCE THESE JUMPERS
DO LET GO, THEY REACH SPEEDS OVER 50 MILES AN HOUR AND
LAUNCH INTO THE RIDE OF A LIFETIME. CLINT JONES: IT JUST
SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE KIND OF FALLING OUT OF THE SKY, BUT
WE’RE ACTUALLY, WITH NEW EQUIPMENT AND NEW TECHNIQUES,
IT’S BECOMING MORE AND MORE LIKE WE ARE OUT THERE FLYING.
CALI: HERE IN THE STATES, THE SPORT
IS NOT EXACTLY HIGH PROFILE. AND ONE FALSE MOVE COULD
MEAN SERIOUS INJURY. SO NATURALLY, I HAD TO ASK…
IN THE U-S, THERE IS NOT REALLY PRO CONTRACTS, THERE’S NOT HUGE
ENDORSEMENTS… WHY DO YOU DO IT?
CLINT JONES: UM, OBVIOUSLY THE LOVE
FOR THE SPORT — THERE IS A LOT OF OTHER THINGS THAT
I COULD BE DOING, YOU KNOW. YOU HAVE THOSE FEW LITTLE
CHANCES TO REALLY PERFORM AND ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS AND
DREAMS, SO THE PRESSURE IS DEFINITELY THERE, BUT THAT’S
WHY WE COMPETE AND THAT’S WHAT MAKES COMPETING SO MUCH
FUN.
TAG AND THROW
CALI: CLINT WILL BEGIN COMPETING THIS WEEKEND. AND ALSO, KEEP YOUR
EYES OPEN FOR HIS TEAMMATE ANDERS JOHNSON. AT 16, HE’S THE YOUNGEST
MALE ON THE ENTIRE U-S TEAM. ERROL?
WEB PLUG
ERROL: THANKS, CALI. AND TO WATCH MORE OF CALI’S INTERVIEW WITH
CLINT, HEAD TO THE SITE. FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A GOOD JUMP
TURNS BAD AND WHY THE SPORT IN THE U-S ISN’T NEARLY AS POPULAR
AS IT IS IN EUROPE. AND THERE’S LOTS MORE ABOUT SKI JUMPING INCLUDING
WHERE IT ORIGINATED. YOU’LL FIND ALL THAT IN OUR WINTER GAMES HEADQUARTERS
AT CHANNELONE.COM.
GOODBYES
ERROL: AND CALI WILL PROFILE MANY MORE ATHLETES NEXT WEEK. IN THE
MEANTIME, IF YOU WANT TO FOLLOW THE ACTION THIS WEEKEND, JUST CHECK
OUT YOUR LOCAL NBC LISTINGS.
THERE YOU GO, A VERY SOLID END TO YOUR WEEK. WE LEAVE YOU NOW WITH
SOME SCENES OF THE MOUNTAINS AROUND TORINO. TAKE CARE.
