Panic! At The Disco

September 21, 2006

If you can’t read the title of this explicit CD by Panic! At The Disco, it says: Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off.

"And it sure as hell ain’t normal."

Startled teachers and students turned their heads to the Channel One TV show this morning when they heard that lyric blaring from the screen. Channel One was playing a Panic! At The Disco song to begin the show. Channel One executives probably thought a cuss word would be a dynamite way to kick off the show this morning.

In 1996, Obligation busted Channel One when we documented their playing of Marilyn Manson music on their show. Channel One at first denied it, then they said it was only instrumental music, and then they saw that we had a tape of their shows (they did it more than once). They reluctantly vowed never to play music from musical artists, like Manson, who are known for their explicit lyrics. That promise was broken today by CEO Judy Harris. She shouldn’t be promoting ANY musical artist on the show, much less a group like Panic! At The Disco.

Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off Lyrics

by Panic! At The Disco

Is it still me that makes you sweat?
Am I who you think about in bed?
When the lights are dim and your hands are shaking as you’re sliding off your dress?
Then think of what you did
And how I hope to God he was worth it.
When the lights are dim and your heart is racing as your fingers touch your skin.
I’ve got more wit, a better kiss, a hotter touch, a better f**k

Parents will never know why their preteen is wanting to buy a Panic! At The Disco CD. They would be surprised to know their school was endorsing the group. Endorsing? Sure, why else did they make the students watch this tribute to the band? The school put their trust in Channel One and this is what they got. That’s why the more academic serious schools in our country have rejected Channel One News.

INTRO PANIC AT THE DISCO

MEKA: WITH SOLD OUT SHOWS WORLDWIDE AND AN MTV MOONMAN TO THEIR NAME, PANIC! AT THE DISCO IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST BANDS OF THE YEAR. ALEXANDER MARQUARDT CAUGHT UP WITH THEM RECENTLY FOR TODAY’S PLAYLIST.

PANIC AT THE DISCO

ALEXANDER: IN THE PAST YEAR, THE LAS VEGAS TEENS FROM PANIC AT THE DISCO HAVE EXPERIENCED AN INCREDIBLE RISE THAT MOST BANDS ONLY DREAM OF. PLUCKED FROM RELATIVE OBSCURITY, PANIC BEAT OUT HEAVYWEIGHTS MADONNA, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS AND CHRISTINA AGUILERA FOR THE COVETED MTV VIDEO OF THE YEAR AWARD. I ASKED RYAN, JON, SPENCER AND BRENDON HOW IT ALL GOT STARTED.

RYAN: WELL WE WERE JUST WRITING SONGS AT HOME IN LAS VEGAS AND WE DID SOME DEMOS AND WE PUT THEM ON THE INTERNET AND PETE FROM FALL OUT BOY ENDED UP HEARING THE STUFF AND SIGNED US SOON AFTER THAT.

ALEXANDER: BUT IT’S NOT ONLY PANIC’S FRESH SOUND THAT DREW IN FALL OUT BOY’S PETE WENTZ AND SELLS OUT CONCERTS. THEY’RE ALSO KNOWN FOR THEIR ELABORATE LIVE SHOWS.

ALEXANDER: YOU GUYS HAVE A CRAZY SET AND YOU SHOWS ARE A LOT OF FUN, ALMOST LIKE A CIRCUS, LIKE MOULIN ROUGE. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO DO THAT SORT OF THING?

RYAN: IT WAS JUST LIKE A FASCINIATION THAT WE HAD WITH SORT OF THAT ERA, LIKE THE EARLY 1900’S FOR SOME REASON WAS JUST A REALLY INTERESTING TIME AND WHAT WAS GOING ON THEN AND SO. I DON’T KNOW, WE WERE JUST FASCINATED BY THAT AND WITH OUR LIVE SHOW WE JUST WANTED TO DO SOMETHING THAT BANDS WEREN’T DOING RIGHT NOW.

ALEXANDER: NOT DOING WHAT OTHER BANDS DO IS VERY IMPORTANT TO PANIC! AT THE DISCO, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, THEY STILL WANT TO BE AS BIG A BAND AS POSSIBLE.

SPENCER: WE WANT TO PLAY IN FRONT OF AS MANY PEOPLE AS WE CAN, WE WANT TO SELL AS MANY RECORDS AS WE CAN, BUT WE WANT TO DO THAT WRITING EXACTLY THE KIDS OF SONGS WE WANT TO WRITE AND DOING LIVE EXACTLY WHAT WE WANT TO DO, AND IF THAT’S POSSIBLE THEN OBVIOUSLY THAT’S THE ULTIMATE GOAL. AND I THINK WITH OUR FIRST HEADLINING TOUR DOING THIS MUCH PRODUCTION, WE JUST, WE’RE ALWAYS GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE IT TO THE NEXT STEP.

ALEXANDER: I COULDN’T HELP BUT ASK THESE ROCK STARS WHAT THEY LISTEN TO IN THEIR DOWNTIME AND I GOT A SURPRISING ANSWER.

RYAN: LATELY TOM WAITES, A LOT OF TOM WAITES STUFF. FRANK SINATRA.

ALEXANDER: BUT WHO DO THEY LOOK TO FOR INSPIRATION?

RYAN: IT IS HARD TO FIND, ESPECIALLY NEW BANDS THAT I ACTUALLY FEEL INFLUENCED MUSICALLY BY. I FEEL LIKE THERE’S BANDS THAT YOU’LL HEAR THAT YOU KIND OF WISH YOU WROTE THEIR SONGS, BUT THEN IT’S MORE OF AN INFLUENCE JUST TO WRITE BETTER SONGS THAN TAKE WHAT THEY DID.

ALEXANDER: PANIC! AT THE DISCO LAUNCHES A NEW NATIONAL TOUR IN THE BEGINNNING OF NOVEMBER. ALEXANDER MARQUARDT. CHANNEL ONE.

Thanks teachers for allowing us to plug our CD and November tour in your classroom.

Channel One News vowed that they would never play or promote music from any act that was known for their explicit lyrics. On Thursday, September 21, Channel One News not only played music from the group Panic! At the Disco but also interviewed the band and gave a tremendous amount of classroom time for the band to win over new fans among the teen and preteen audience.

Channel One executives and the few production people left on the payroll knew the lyrics of this group’s songs. Their "big" song is called "I Write Sins Not Tragedies." This group is known for their repetition of verses.

"I Write Sins Not Tragedies"

Oh, well imagine, as I’m pacing the pews in a church corridor,
and I can’t help but to hear, no I can’t help but to hear an exchanging of words:
"What a beautiful wedding! What a beautiful wedding!" says a bridesmaid to a waiter.
"And yes, but what a shame, what a shame, the poor groom’s bride is a whore."

I’d chime in with a "Haven’t you people ever heard of closing a goddamn door?!"
No, it’s much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise and rationality.
I’d chime in, "Haven’t you people ever heard of closing a goddamn door?!"
No, it’s much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of…

Well in fact, well I’ll look at it this way, I mean technically our marriage is saved
Well this calls for a toast, so pour the champagne
Oh! Well in fact, well I’ll look at it this way, I mean technically our marriage is saved
Well this calls for a toast, so pour the champagne, pour the champagne

I’d chime in with a "Haven’t you people ever heard of closing a goddamn door?!"
No, it’s much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise and rationality.
I’d chime in, "Haven’t you people ever heard of closing a goddamn door?!"
No, it’s much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise and rationality.

Again…

I’d chime in, "Haven’t you people ever heard of closing a goddamn door?!"
No, it’s much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise and rationality.
I’d chime in, "Haven’t you people ever heard of closing a goddamn door?!"
No, it’s much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise and rationality.

Obligation regrets having to put these words on our website. Teachers forced to show their students Channel One News probably have no idea what is in this band’s songs. Obligation is the only organization that is reporting on what Channel One is presenting to students. We are going to continue to lay out the facts and let the public decide what to do about this controversial company.

Maybe… maybe it’s time to close the school house door to Channel One News.
