What is sponsored content?

Sponsored content is a program to surface resources to our community and generate funds to keep Edmodo free. This content includes offerings from Edmodo, unpaid “public service” messages from your school or district, or other education organizations (e.g., Teacher of the Year and other announcements), and paid content from partners.

We are constantly testing different versions and formats of sponsored content to best meet the needs of our community.

Why does Edmodo display sponsored content?

As the largest social learning community in the world, Edmodo fosters curiosity, communication, and collaboration amongst teachers, students, parents and administrators. Our mission is to connect all learners with the people and resources they need to meet their full potential. We believe that sponsored content directly ties into our mission by allowing us to keep the platform free for teachers and students everywhere. We are being very thoughtful in our approach to sponsored content and are focused on delivering an experience that will support the educational uses of our product and protect the privacy of our users.

How is Edmodo protecting the privacy of its users with sponsored content?

Protecting the privacy of its users has always been of the utmost importance to Edmodo.  Edmodo was created in 2008 with privacy in mind, with the goal of providing teachers and students with a school-specific, private, safe and secure alternative to traditional consumer-based social media networks.

Because of this long standing commitment to privacy, Edmodo has put in place a number of policies and technical measures to make sure that advertising is done appropriately and in compliance with all legal requirements.

  • We are not creating behavioral profiles.
  • We do not share personally-identifiable information such as name, email address, etc. or any information about what you do on Edmodo with 3rd parties for advertising purposes.
  • To deliver ads, we use Google Ad Networks’ TFCD (Tag For Child-Directed Treatment) feature, which ensures we remain COPPA compliant and disables interest-based advertising (profiling and targeting students’ and teachers’ interests) and retargeting.

For additional information, please see our Advertising Policy. And, for more information about Edmodo’s general privacy practices and policies, see our Privacy Policy.

How do you source/vet content providers?

Edmodo is very careful about the types of advertisements that it permits to be displayed to students and teachers.

Because of the immense trust our users place in us, we have implemented a number of steps to prevent harmful or inappropriate content from being shown to our users, including having an internal team made up of former teachers review sponsored content to remove any that does not meet our strict standards. See our Advertising Policy for a list of what advertisements that are prohibited.

Will students see sponsored content?

Sponsored content will be available to students. Edmodo is very careful about the types of advertisements that it permits to be displayed to students. We have a direct relationship with the advertisers we permit on Edmodo–we do not do programmatic advertising– which allows us to vet and control these ads.Edmodo is different from many other education technology companies because Edmodo has a direct relationship with the teachers, parents, and students using the platform who make up the global Edmodo community and who each have their own Edmodo accounts.  Because of that, user trust is critical to Edmodo and Edmodo’s advertising to students was designed with user trust in mind.

Edmodo has put in place a number of policies and technical measures to make sure that advertising is done appropriately and in compliance with all legal requirements.  For example, we do not share personal information with advertisers (including name, address, email address, phone number, etc.) and we do not share Edmodo specific data, like grades, assignments, messages. We also do not create or allow the creation of behavioral profiles.

Edmodo was one of the original fourteen signatories to the Student Privacy Pledge, which now has over 300 signatories, and Edmodo will continue to lead the education technology industry to ensure that all learners can benefit from technology and have their privacy rights protected at the same time.
