The Marine ad that ran all year in classrooms.

May 26, 2011

Young people forced to watch Channel One News will be affected by this ad but will have little time or help to think about it.

This recruitment commercial has run for the entire 2010-11 school year.

Secondary school students who are unfortunate to attend schools that still have a contract with Channel One News, have seen this one particular ad at least once every week.

What’s with the young man running through the crops? Is this a not too subtle message saying, “Run, actually RUN, away from whatever problems you have with your family and school and join the Marines”?

The irony is that students who are forced to watch Channel One lose up to one week of potential academic time watching this controversial TV show and therefore suffer greatly because they have less time to learn. Unquestionably, there will be students who drop out because of Channel One’s massive waste of their school time.[12 minutes a day = 1 hour a week = 36 lost school hours a year. An instructional week of school is usually 30 hours. Channel One is usually shown from 6th to 12th grade. Up to seven lost weeks of school time.]

So the harm Channel One does to students helps create a group of young people who need an alternative to continuing with their education.

Join the military.

Channel One’s captive audience is a real plus for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, all of them Channel One advertisers.
