From Jim Metrock:
Ken McNatt just sent me and email telling me Channel One had
posted the script of their Thursday show on their web site. I
received the email at 10:40 PM CST tonight Wednesday, November
17.
The script of the completed show is below. If you are wondering
how a news organization could do something like this, well, welcome
to Channel One News – the stalest news in town.
This THURSDAY show was recorded today, WEDNESDAY, at a Catholic
school near Jackson, Mississippi. This school devoted the entire
afternoon (12:00 -3:00) to Channel One. There were no classes
in the afternoon so the students could go to the gym to be "extras" for
Channel One’s filming. William Heller is the principal of this
private school. A few years ago, an administrator who would do
something this goofy would have been fired or "reassigned."
It is no big deal when a private school has Channel One. There
is no waste of tax money and if parents want someone like Mr.
Heller to waste their children’s educational time, with Channel
One’s raunchy movie ads and junk food commercials, then so be
it.
The news you see below is CURRENT news 10 1/2 hours ago! It
will be played TOMORROW at schools that show Channel One News.
Some schools show the program at lunch or at the end of the day.
If so, the "news" may be more than 24-hours old.
Channel One News is made up of lazy people. Are they going to
knock themselves out to get hard, current news to students? Heck,
no. It would be too costly and after all, the students aren’t
expecting Channel One to deliver any hard news. What is on Channel
One News is already known by any student who watches any TV news
at home or glances at a newspaper.

[TALENT=SOFIA/SETH]
SOFIA: WELCOME BACK. MANY TEENAGERS BEGIN DATING FOR THE FIRST TIME WHEN
THEY’RE IN JUNIOR HIGH OR HIGH SCHOOL.DERRICK: AND WHILE DATING CAN BRING
A LOT OF NEW EXPERIENCES, NOT ALL OF
THEM ARE GOOD, RIGHT, SETH?
[INTRO ABUSE]
[AIRDATE=11/18/04]
[PRO=FITZGERALD]
[TALENT=SETH]
SETH: THAT’S RIGHT, DERRICK. MORE AND MORE, TEENS ARE FINDING THEMSELVES
IN ABUSIVE, EVEN VIOLENT RELATIONSHIPS. IN THE FIRST OF A TWO-PART SERIES,
WE’LL TAKE A LOOK AT WHY SOME TEENS ARE BECOMING VICTIMS OF DATING
VIOLENCE.
[ABUSIVE]
[AIRDATE=11/18/04]
[PRO=FITZGERALD]
[TALENT=SETH]
SETH: FALLING IN LOVE CAN BE INTENSE. BUT WHAT IF THAT INTENSITY BECOMES
TOO MUCH? FEELINGS LIKE JEALOUSY AND POSSESSIVENESS CAN SOMETIMES GO
TOO
FAR AND BECOME ABUSIVE, AND THAT’S MORE COMMON IN RELATIONSHIPS THAN
PEOPLE MIGHT THINK.JESSICA ARONOFF – ATTORNEY, BREAK THE CYCLE: IT’S
ACTUALLY QUITE COMMON.
IN FACT, STUDIES INDICATE THAT IT’S AS COMMON, IF NOT MORE COMMON, THAN
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN ADULT RELATIONSHIPS.SETH: ONE IN THREE TEENS EXPERIENCE
ABUSE OR VIOLENCE IN A RELATIONSHIP.JESSICA ARONOFF: THE ADULT COMMUNITY
DOESN’T TAKE ABUSE IN TEEN
RELATIONSHIPS VERY SERIOUSLY BECAUSE THEY THINK IT’S JUST PUPPY LOVE.SETH:
NEARLY 95 PERCENT OF TEEN DATING VIOLENCE VICTIMS ARE GIRLS.LORENA PONCE
INTERVAL HOUSE: I DIDN’T SEE MYSELF GETTING OUT OF THAT ROOM
ALIVE.SETH: EXPERTS SAY THAT TEENS CAN MISTAKE ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR FOR LOVE
… AND
THAT ABUSE CAN COME IN MANY FORMS.JESSICA ARONOFF: EXTREME JEALOUSY IS
ONE FORM OF ABUSE. IT’S NOT PHYSICAL
ABUSE – IT’S NOT HITTING, IT DOESN’T LEAVE A MARK – BUT IT IS EMOTIONAL
ABUSE AND CAN BE VERBAL ABUSE AS WELL.SETH: LORENA PONCE’S BOYFRIEND
BECAME SO JEALOUS HE THREATENED HER LIFE.LORENA PONCE: HE TOLD ME HE
WAS GOING TO KILL THIS GUY THAT I WAS TALKING
TO – MY FRIEND. AND HE GENTLY TOOK OUT THE BULLETS OUT OF THE GUN, HE
GAVE
ME ONE BULLET AND PUT IT IN MY HAND AND CLOSED MY FIST. AND HE TOLD ME,
‘IF YOU DON’T STOP TALKING TO HIM, OR IF YOU EVER LEAVE ME, I WILL KILL
YOU WITH THIS BULLET.’SETH: STILL, ABUSE IN TEENAGE RELATIONSHIPS CAN
BE PREVENTED. SANTA MONICA
HIGH SCHOOL IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HOSTS AN ORGANIZATION CALLED "BREAK
THE
CYCLE" … ONE OF MANY AROUND THE COUNTRY FIGHTING TEEN ABUSE.JESSICA
ARONOFF: WE TALK ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.WOMAN: A LOT OF BEHAVIORS ASSOCIATED
WITH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ARE ILLEGAL.JESSICA ARONOFF: WHAT ARE SOME OF
THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ABUSE, WHAT IS
THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE WARNING SIGNS OF ABUSE?AMIRA
SAMUEL: I WAS LISTENING TO HER AND I WAS LIKE – WAIT, HE DOES THAT.
OH, HE DOES THAT, TOO. HEY, THAT’S THE WAY I FEEL.SETH: BUT ABUSE CAN
ALSO BE EMOTIONAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL OR VERBAL.AMIRA SAMUEL: HE YELLED AT
ME, AND HE CALLED ME BAD NAMES AND HE
EMBARRASSED ME IN FRONT OF PEOPLE. AND HE TOLD LIES ABOUT ME AND …
AND
HE WAS ENJOYING HIMSELF AND I WASN’T, AND THAT WAS ABUSE.SETH: VERBAL
ABUSE SOMETIMES LEADS TO PHYSICAL VIOLENCE.ELIA RENTERIA – INTERVAL HOUSE:
WE WERE ARGUING AND I PUSHED HIM. SO WHEN
I PUSHED HIM, HE SLAPPED ME.SETH: SURPRISINGLY, NEARLY 80 PERCENT OF
GIRLS WHO HAVE BEEN PHYSICALLY
ABUSED BY THEIR BOYFRIENDS CONTINUE TO DATE THEM.ELIA RENTERIA: IT WASN’T
THAT EASY FOR ME TO JUST GET OUT OF IT. I MEAN,
THIS GUY, WHENEVER WE HAD ANY PROBLEMS, HE WOULD THREATEN TO KILL HIMSELF.SETH:
BUT THE ABUSE CAN BE STOPPED.JESSICA ARONOFF: HERE IN CALIFORNIA, A TEEN
WHO IS 12 YEARS OF AGE OR
OLDER CAN GET A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RESTRAINING ORDER WITHOUT THEIR PARENTS
INVOLVEMENT IN ANY WAY.SETH: ONE OF THE BIGGEST STEPS IN ENDING AN ABUSIVE
RELATIONSHIP IS
TELLING SOMEONE ABOUT IT. AMIRA SOUGHT HELP AT ‘BREAK THE CYCLE’ AND
BEGAN
WORKING THERE AS A VOLUNTEER.AMIRA SAMUEL: I THINK I’VE COME OUT OF IT
STRONGER. I THINK I’M MUCH MORE
OPEN.SETH: ELIA AND LORENA SOUGHT HELP AT A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER
CALLED
INTERVAL HOUSE. THEY BEGAN PARTICIPATING IN A TEEN OUTREACH PROGRAM,
PERFORMING REENACTMENTS OF THEIR OWN EXPERIENCES WITH DATING VIOLENCE
AT
HIGH SCHOOLS.LORENA PONCE: I LOVE GOING UP AND WAKING UP EVERY MORNING
AND THINKING –
WOW, I COULD CHANGE A LIFE TODAY.
