From Jim Metrock: This week, Channel One News has rolled out a major promotional effort to get students to purchase the new CD from a British musician named Craig David.
Students are urged to enter a contest to win a concert at their school. Their principal must give written approval for the Craig David concert to be performed on school property. Few principals would want to be a part of this promotional effort to help Atlantic Records promote this recording artist, especially if they knew of David’s lyrics.
Channel One is saying they are offering the concert to reward a school for doing something good for their community. This is just a cover for their effort to advertise this artist.
Alcohol is a big part of his music. Sexual references are routine. David is under 21 and when he sings about the pleasures of hard drinking he is sending a very powerful and disturbing message to young people.
Any principal that would allow this record company to use public property, like a public school gym, to promote the music of any singer, especially one like Craig David, ought to be fired. Channel One is putting school administrators into jeopardy by urging students to get their schools involved with this record company-promotion.
