Houghton Mifflin/Channel One News

Channel One News is a youth marketing company whose main purpose is to get advertising to a captive audience of impressionable schoolchildren. The company loans a school TV equipment in exchange for the school’s contractual pledge to show students a daily, 12-minute, hyper-commercial, TV program called Channel One News. Students lose one hour a week of schools time, which equates to one lost week of instructional time (32 hours) per year. No educational organization endorses the use of Channel One News.

Channel One has fallen on very hard times. Once they claimed over 8 million students were under contract. Since 1997 they have continued to lose schools and now they claim “nearly five million” students and the true figure is probably lower.

In May 2014, publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt acquired Channel One from ZelnickMedia the makers of the ultra-violent Grand Thief Auto video game series. Houghton Mifflin did not disclose the purchase price.

At the end of 2014 most of Channel One’s full-paying advertisers have abandoned the program.

Oprah, You Shouldn’t Have

Ms. Winfrey should be donating money to rid schools of Channel One News, instead she gives the company her support. It was shocking to see Oprah Winfrey on Channel One News uttering the words, "Hello Channel One Watchers, I’m Oprah…" Does Ms. Winfrey know that students are COMPELLED to be "Channel One Watchers" because...

Marine School

The U.S. Marines are a major advertiser on Channel One News. Today students watched a "news" story about a public school run by the Marines. Why was this very long story on classroom TV sets all across the nation? It is not an important story. It is not hard news. There is no information...

Channel One used to have "Flagship" schools. These were schools that were very loyal to Channel One. One such school was Bartow High School in Bartow, Florida. Where Is Haehl?

As 2008 begins, we find things so bad at Channel One that the president and CEO does not want his name associated with the company. We have been monitoring the Channelonenetwork.com site since Kent Haehl was announced as the new Channel One president on November 5. It’s been two months and they haven’t...

A Strange End To Channel One’s Strange Year

We have already documented Channel One’s anti-“Merry Christmas” policy. (NBC produces The Today Show and Channel One News (so they can advertise their brand to young people). Anchors on the Today Show routinely wish viewers a “Merry Christmas” but it’s “Happy Holidays” on the show aimed at young people.) It’s interesting this week before...

Alloy Was Paid To Take Channel One

Alloy’s overworked accounting department.   In last week’s conference call, Alloy’s CEO Matt Diamond mentioned the company is reporting an "extraordinary gain" of $5,500,000. This amount comes from the purchase of Channel One from Primedia, Inc. earlier in the year. Putting it as simple as we can: Primedia tried for years to find a...
