Media Literacy

Media literacy – the ability to critically consume and create media – is an essential skill in today’s world. Media literacy education seeks to give kids and adults greater freedom by empowering them to access, analyze, evaluate and produce media.

Media literate youth and adults are better able to understand the complex messages we receive from television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, billboards, signs, packaging, marketing materials, video games, recorded music, the Internet and other forms of media. They can understand not only the surface content of media messages (the “text”) but also the more important meanings (the “subtext”) hidden beneath the surface. People who are media literate can also create their own media, becoming active participants in our media culture.

Channel One News now exploits elementary school students in Kansas.

From Jim Metrock:  This is an email I wrote to Ms. Sadie Camac, a fifth grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School in August, KS. Ms. Camac, As an elementary school teacher you probably are not too familiar with the controversial nature of Channel One News.  Historically the firm has aimed their program...

Why is Channel One News being escorted out of classrooms? This is one reason.

From Jim Metrock:   This is a commercial for a new cartoon show.  It aired on Channel One News.   Millions of schoolchildren wasted precious school time to watch this ad.   Why?  Why would they put their school books down and watch this nonsense?  Why would any teacher allow this silliness to be...

Why in the world are you people continuing to pound schoolchildren with commercials for the high-sugar SunnyD drink? Another...

Turning ads into news: US Army pays Channel One News for positive story

Reporter Shelby Holliday shills for military.   From Jim Metrock: On April 17, Channel One News devoted nearly one third of its program (30%) to a “news story” about the U.S. Army.   Students may have watched this news story or they may have ignored it.  One thing I am fairly certain of is that few...

We found a person who really, really likes Channel One News, let us introduce you to Andrew Kardon.

April 20, 2014
We found a person who really, really likes Channel One News, let us introduce you to Andrew Kardon.

Channel One News paying people to write positive articles about their company.        From Jim Metrock:  The stink was overpowering the moment I landed on Andrew Kardon’s Mommysbusy.com “family oriented” site. The article I first saw was a Kardon homage to Channel One News.  What?!  His praise seemed unauthentic, awkward, and forced.  The man...
